MCD bypolls were held in five civic body wards - Ward No 32N, (Rohini-C), Ward No 62N, (Shalimar Bagh North) in North Delhi and Ward No 02-E (Trilokpuri), Ward No 08-E (Kalyanpuri) and Ward No 41-E (Chauhan Bangar) in East Delhi - last week. Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP candidates had won in four out of five wards - Rohini-C, Trilokpuri, Kalyanpuri and Chauhan Bangar. The BJP was winner in Shalimar Bagh North.

BJP sweeps Gujarat local body polls, wins all 31 district panchayats

The BJP won all 31 district panchayats, 70 out of 81 municipalities and was far ahead of main rival Congress in 231 taluka panchayats as counting for the second phase of local body polls in Gujarat was underway on Tuesday. The success follows the BJP s clean sweep in elections for six municipal corporations in the first phase last month. In the second phase of elections for which counting began at 9 in the morning, the BJP had won 6,110 out of 8,261 seats for which results had been announced by the State Election Commission by evening. A total of 8,474 seats were up for grabs in the second phase across district and taluka panchayats and municipal councils. Elections were held on February 28.

The State Election Commission data up to 7 pm on Tuesday showed BJP winning 3,322 seats in Taluka Panchayats, 785 seats in district panchayats and 2,063 seats in municipalities. Independent candidates won 115, 3 and 172 seats respectively for the three civic bodies. After its successful debut in Municipal Corporation elections in Surat, Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP surprised the political opponents by making further inroads into Gujarat villages.
