DA Region 8 distributes P538 million worth of rice seeds, fertilizers to EV farmers

Francisco Rosaroso DA-RFO 8 regional information officer told Manila Bulletin that DA-RFO 8 has already earmarked and distributed 34,269 bags of rice seeds and 52,950 bags of fertilizers positioned in the six provinces of Region 8 as of the second week of this month. Leyte got the lion share of these initial deliveries with more than 23,000 bags of rice seeds and 36,000 bags of fertilizers, he added.

DBP inks pact with DA for cash subsidies for marginal farmers and fisherfolks

CALAMBA CITY, Laguna, Dec. 21 (PIA) State-owned Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) has signed an agreement with the Department of Agriculture (DA) for the distribution of cash subsidies to around 900,000 marginal farmers under the DA’s Cash and Food Subsidy to Marginal Farmers and Fishers (CFSMFF) program, a top official said.   DBP President and Chief Executive Officer Emmanuel G. Herbosa said that this newly-developed DA program utilizes financial technology through the use of an e-voucher system to ensure more efficient and transparent program implementation.   “Through the e-voucher system, beneficiaries can claim their cash assistance of P3000 each at any DBP-accredited payout center by presenting their government-issued ID and the unique reference code sent via text message by the implementing agencies,” Herbosa said.

PH still way behind in rice production

Published December 21, 2020, 7:30 AM           Rice Tariffication Law (RTL), which liberalized rice importation in the Philippines and aims to make rice farmers competitive, is approaching its third year of implementation, but the country is still way behind in rice production compared to its neighboring countries.           According to policy advocacy group Action for Economic Reforms’ (AER) policy note “Taking Stock of Rice Industry Statistics post-RTL”, it stated that despite the current encouraging progress in rice production, “achieving domestic rice sector competitiveness is a far cry from short-term improvements in palay production.”           “To put things into perspective, our current yield is comparable to what Vietnam’s average yield was in the year 2000,” the policy note said.
