Suddenly there were dozens of young men born into great wealth who were also educated and deeply cultured, having often been the first members in their families to attend elite schools and universities. Such were Sergey Shchukin and Ivan Morozov, who in the years leading up to the First World War amassed private collections of modern French art of such quality that they were without counterpart anywhere in the world, even in Paris. WFSU Local Routes Artist Talk: Wendy Red Star in Conversation with Jordan Amirkhani On March 11th at 6:00 p.m., you are invited to a virtual conversation between artist Wendy Red Star and curator Dr. Jordan Amirkhani. Wendy Red Star uses photography, performance, fiber arts, and video to recast and interrogate historical narratives. Raised on the Apsáalooke (Crow) reservation in Montana, she draws upon deep research in archives to re-examine primary source photographs and cultural heritage. Her work has been shown and collected by the Met, MASS MoCA, the Portland Museum of Art, and the St. Louis Museum of Art. She guest-edited Aperture’s September 2020 issue on Native American photography.

Berry Campbell Gallery is pleased to announce a survey exhibition of collage works by Queens based, African American artist, Frank Wimberley (b. 1926). Since the 1960s, Wimberley has been known for creating dynamic, multi-layered, abstract paintings described in 2001 by New York Times art critic, Grace Glueck, as “. . . good to behold: beautifully brushed and infused with a light that magnifies their intensity. . ..” This special exhibition will feature both paintings with collage elements as well as traditional collage works on paper and will highlight some of Frank Wimberley’s most important collages to date, including several examples going back to the early 1970s.
