On Tuesday, the city of Alameda, Calif. released police body camera footage of an interaction with a 26-year-old man who died after police pinned him to the ground for at least five minutes.
Mario Gonzalez, of Oakland, died April 19 after what police previously called a scuffle with officers. The Alameda Police Department said Gonzalez suffered some sort of medical emergency following an interaction with police.
Following criticism from Gonzalez s family, the city released the nearly hour long video that included body camera footage from multiple officers on scene and the original 911 call. Officials edited the video to redact personal information from the caller and Gonzalez s face after he becomes unresponsive.
Body cam footage released Tuesday shows California police officers kneeling on a handcuffed man until he was unresponsive, a death the department previously blamed on a “physical altercation.”

Police in Alameda, California, have released body camera footage on Tuesday that shows officers pinning down a man, including by kneeling on him, during an arrest that ended with his death.
Mario Arenales Gonzalez, 26, died after an encounter with officers at a park in the 800 block of Oak Street in Alameda on April 19.
In a statement last week, the Alameda Police Department said Gonzalez had a medical emergency after officers tried to detain him.
Another statement said preliminary information indicated that there was a scuffle as officers attempted to place the man s hands behind his back, and that officers did not use any weapons during the encounter.
