(Courtesy photo) The three women join 23 other people on the council to give recommendations to environmental councils For the next four years, three Native women will be volunteering their time to be part of the climate justice fight alongside the White House. Native women from Arizona, Alaska and South Dakota, who have all devoted their lives to protecting the environment, will serve on the White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council to provide recommendations to the Council on Environmental Quality and the White House Environmental Justice Interagency Council on how to fight the climate crisis.

Vi Waghiyi, raised in Savoonga on St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea, will be one of 26 members on the White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council, the White House announced last week. This position is not only a voice for our Sivuqaq Yupik people or the communities in the Norton Sound region, Waghiyi, 62, said last week. It will be a voice for Alaska and Arctic and Indigenous people. We are generally never at the table when decisions are made for us miles and miles away.
