There hasn t been much change in the trajectory of either US Covid metric: new cases continue to increase at a modest pace, while US Covid deaths continue to fall. New cases of Covid confirmed over the week ending April 3rd were 5.9% higher that those confirmed over the week ending March 27th, and 15.9% higher than those of the week ending March 20th, while US Covid deaths during the week ending April 3rd were 12.2% lower than the prior week, and down 74.7% from the peak week in late January.

On Wednesday, the First Circuit issued an opinion affirming the District of Maineâs decision to grant a preliminary injunction to cable providers on First Amendment grounds against Maine regarding its à la carte cable law, ruling that cable providers should not be required to allow consumers to pick individual channels.
In 2019 Maine enacted a law (H.P. 606 – L.D. 832), entitled, âAn Act to Expand Options for Consumers of Cable Television in Purchasing Individual Channels and Programs,â which requires cable companies to allow consumers to pick cable channels or programs individually for purchase, instead of bundled in a channel or package of channels; thus, imposing an à la carte requirement for cable providers. Previously, the District of Maine granted Comcastâs preliminary injunction against the law, finding that the law was not preempted by federal law and violated Comcastâs and other cable providersâ
Former cop is charged

A former Calais police officer who resigned from the force Jan. 30 was charged Friday after allegedly furnishing fentanyl and hydrocodone on the grounds of Narraguagus Junior/Senior High School in Harrington, according to a copy of the charging document provided by the Office of the Maine Attorney General.
Jeffrey Bishop, 53, of Cherryfield was arrested on four counts of aggravated drug furnishing and one count of unlawful drug trafficking by the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, for whom Bishop once worked, and agents from the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency.
Bishop resigned from the Calais Police Department effective Jan. 30, according to Calais City Manager Michael Ellis.
