Talks over bill to overhaul policing intensify amid new urgency after Daunte Wright shooting

Talks over bill to overhaul policing intensify amid new urgency after Daunte Wright shooting Active discussions are underway in Congress over a bipartisan bill to overhaul laws surrounding policing as the Biden administration made the decision earlier this week to let Congress tackle the issue, standing down on its campaign promise to create a White House commission to study the issue. The conversation took on new urgency in recent days after the police shooting death of Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old Black man, outside Minneapolis, just miles away from the courtroom where police officer Derek Chauvin is on trial for the murder of George Floyd. Floyd’s death sparked protests and a nationwide reckoning on systemic racial injustice last summer, with protests flaring again this week, turning violent at times.

Building Back Better, March 23, 2021 | Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck

Note : Congress recently voted on a $1.9 trillion COVID-19 stimulus package the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA, P.L.117-2). It includes stimulus checks for individuals, expanded unemployment benefits, and funding for vaccines, state and local governments, schools and child care. The ARPA marks a huge win for the Biden administration during its first 50 days in office. Before the ink is dry, the administration has already pivoted to the second phase of the Biden agenda: Build Back Better. While ARPA was largely a relief bill, the next phase will be about rebuilding the economy, starting with a mult itrillion-dollar plan that includes infrastructure, green energy and incentives to bolster domestic manufacturing. It will also build upon the individual relief provided in the first bill and seek to make those provisions permanent and will likely be paid for by corporate tax rate increases, a repeal of oil and gas tax breaks and increases in taxes on the wealthy.

Luke and I were a team, with a goal to better our state and our country. I want to thank him for paving the way for me, Letlow said on the House floor after being sworn in. I am here today to carry that torch forward, to be a voice for our farmers, to champion education, to help bring broadband to our rural communities.

Biden announces limited gun restrictions as pressure rises following mass shootings

Biden announces limited gun restrictions as pressure rises following mass shootings Facing pressure to act after a recent spate of high-profile mass shootings, President Joe Biden unveiled a package of moves Thursday that seek to address a scourge of gun violence he deemed a blemish on the nation. Gun violence in this country is an epidemic, Biden said in the Rose Garden to an audience of lawmakers and Americans touched by gun violence. And it s an international embarrassment. The executive actions which Biden repeatedly argued did nothing to impinge on the Second Amendment right to bear arms include efforts to restrict weapons known as ghost guns that can be built using parts and instructions purchased online.
