Police detain 10 suspected drug traffickers
The police carried out 33 searches for suspected drug trafficking, arrested 10 people and five defendants, and seized 340 doses of various drugs and weapons in an operation in the municipalities of Portimao and Silves, a police source said on 11 March.
The Commissioner Fábio Coelho, of the Criminal Investigation Squad of the Portimão division of the PSP, told Lusa news agency that during the raids, the authorities seized 340 doses of various drugs, money and weapons, and that seven of the detainees will be presented today to the criminal investigation judge for application of possible measures of coercion.
Spanish drug traffic network dismantled in Algarve
A drug trafficking network that operated in Spain and had connections to the Algarve was dismantled yesterday.
The bust was the result of a joint investigation by Spanish authorities and the Faro and Portimão PJ police branches.
At least 40 people were detained and around ten tons of hashish seized.
The network reportedly used the Algarve coast to position speedboats, which would fetch hashish from Morocco or other vessels on the high seas. The drug would later be unloaded in Spain. The speedboats would be transported by land, in trucks, back to the Algarve, and left on docks in the region.
