ECPPS board delays in-person return till Jan 21

The Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Board of Education has voted to delay students’ return for in-person classes until Jan. 21, citing a spike in COVID-19 cases, a shortage of substitute teachers, and growing anxiety among school staff about the uptick in virus infections. ECPPS elementary school students had been scheduled to return from holiday break for in-person classes on Jan. 6. Middle and high school students also were scheduled to return that day for a mixture of online and in-person classes. Students will still return to classes on Jan. 6; however, all of their classes will be online. Face-to-face, in-person instruction will not resume for any students until Jan. 21.

ARHS to receive 4K doses of vaccine next week, more on the way

Albemarle Regional Health Services made the announcement during a Zoom meeting with local officials on Thursday. COVID-19 vaccinations require two shots and the first shipments would be enough for 4,000 health care workers in ARHS’ eight-county region. The first vaccines, or Phase 1A, will be administered first to health care workers at high risk for exposure to COVID-19, ARHS said. That includes personnel like doctors, nurses and others who interact and care for patients with COVID-19. Also included are workers who clean areas used by patients and those who administer vaccines to workers. “The 4,000 initial doses will only be a start to cover all of the people outlined in Phase 1A,” said ARHS spokeswoman Amy Underhill.
