Man in court for gold worth R11m

A 33-year-old man is expected to appear at Kempton Park Regional Court on Monday for being in the possession of 23 pieces of gold worth R11 million.
The Hawks said he was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport on Saturday by their Serious Organised Crime Investigation team.
Spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Philani Nkwalase, said the traveller was requested to scan his luggage at customs sections at international arrivals when authorities found the gold in his luggage.
“He allegedly failed to declare any items and did not have any permits or licences to be in possession or transport gold and the Hawks were called to effect the arrest and further investigation,” Nkwalase said.

The suspect, who was travelling from Zimbabwe to South Africa, was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport on Saturday.
He was allegedly found in possession of 23 pieces of gold estimated to be worth R11 million.

Moderna has tested its first Covid booster shot, and according to preliminary results, it may neutralise the virus variants first identified in South Africa (B.1.351/501Y.V2) and Brazil (P.1/501Y.V3).

JOHANNESBURG - With the arrival of the first batch of Pfizer vaccines, South Africa has officially expanded its mass COVID-19 inoculation drive.
More than 325,000 doses arrived at OR Tambo International Airport just before midnight on Sunday.
Last week, government resumed its Sisonke vaccination programme.
The programme was halted temporarily after half a dozen patients developed blood clots after being vaccinated in the United States.
