Chicago health experts answer COVID-19 questions on vaccines, immunity

What should I do after getting vaccinated? According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an individual is fully vaccinated after two weeks of receiving a second dose of the Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech shots or a single dose of the Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) shot. After reaching this status, the CDC says individuals can gather indoors without masks with other fully vaccinated individuals. If a fully vaccinated individual is exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19, they do not need to get tested or self-quarantine unless they are showing symptoms. Exceptions apply if the individual lives in a group setting.

No more Madigans, maybe, as 10-year term limits for legislative leaders passes Illinois house

(Editor s Note: This article was published first at Illinois Policy Institute). Former state Rep. Mike Madigan was the longest-serving statehouse legislative leader in U.S. history, serving as Illinois House speaker for 36 years. On April 22, Illinois House members passed a bill to prevent another Madigan by limiting legislative leadership to 10 years. House Bill 642 passed with 115 “yes” votes and one abstention. Under this legislation, no person may serve more than 10 consecutive years in any of the following leadership roles: speaker of the House of Representatives, president of the Senate, minority leader of the House of Representatives, and minority leader of the Senate.

Treatment found to improve cognitive function in patients with fragile X syndrome

E-Mail An experimental treatment produced improvements in cognitive function and language in patients with fragile X syndrome, according to study results published on April 29 in Nature Medicine. Fragile X syndrome (known as FXS for short) is the most common known genetic cause of autism and the most common cause of inherited intellectual disability. These results offer hope for patients with fragile X syndrome and their families, said Elizabeth Berry-Kravis, MD, PhD, a pediatric neurologist at Rush University Medical Center and principal investigator of the study. The majority of clinical outcome measures were in favor of the drug. These measures included performance-based assessments, biomarkers, and parent and physician-rated scales, which in combination, suggest a meaningful impact on the global FXS disease process.
