Today (9 April) is an incredibly sad one for Queen Elizabeth II, as it was announced that her husband of 73 years, Prince Philip, had passed away peacefully at Windsor Castle earlier this morning. Following the death of her beloved partner and such a prominent royal figure, the Queen will now be expected to enter a period of mourning that will last for eight days.
During those eight days, no laws will be given the Royal Assent (meaning no new laws will be passed) and affairs of state will be put on hold by way of showing respect for Her Majesty s loss. After those eight days have been observed, the Queen will then undergo a further 30 days of mourning before likely making a return to her public engagements and duties.
