What soaring lumber prices mean for your home renovation

TORONTO Lumber prices in North America have reached levels unseen before, driving up the costs of home renovations and general contracting services across Canada. Ian Dunn, president of the Ontario Forest Industries Association (OFIA), says there are a variety of factors amid the COVID-19 pandemic that have contributed to this increase in cost. Lumber is ultimately a commodity and it responds to commodity-type pricing, Dunn told CTV s Your Morning on Tuesday. Dunn explained that supply and demand has helped increase the price of lumber by roughly 170 per cent in the last six months. On the supply side of things… and as a result of the health and safety concerns, we scaled back operations in the mills. There s fewer people working the mills and that s contributed to a bit of a supply gap that we continue to see today, Dunn said.

Global Lumber Shortage Will Not Affect Sustainability, says Ontario Forest Industries Association President

SHARE ON: Big pile of logs lying in a field While the world has been hit with a global lumber shortage, don’t expect more clear-cutting in the region. Ian Dunn, President and CEO of the Ontario Forest Industries Association, says there has been a global spike in demand for dimensional structural SPS lumber. This lumber is typically used for home building, which has skyrocketed during the pandemic. However, Dunn says the impact on lumber mills in the area will only go so far. Because of the greater diversity of timber in the region, like red and white pine, SPS lumber only makes up a portion of the total output. Items like utility poles, decorative panels and doors are a large portion of production in the Opeongo Highlands. Dunn says there is less fluctuation in the prices of these products. While some lumber mills may see a bump due to increased prices, others may not.

OFIA s 78th annual meeting: innovation, outreach and embracing the bioeconomy

Ian Dunn, interim president and CEO, OFIA. When a world-wide pandemic was declared just over a year ago, there was rampant speculation about how it would impact the global economy. Now, as vaccinations ramp up, the focus is shifting to economic recovery. Appropriately, the theme of the Ontario Forest Industries Association (OFIA)’s 2021 convention, which took place online on February 24, was sustaining economic recovery. Ian Dunn, interim president and CEO of OFIA, kicked off the four-hour long conference by announcing $54 million from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry for the public access roads fund. He then outlined how forestry is well-positioned to lay the foundations for economic recovery in Ontario.
