The Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) has appointed Susan Speigel, BA, B.Arch., (EQ. M.Arch), OAA, FRAIC, as the organization’s new President. Speigel was acclaimed to the one-year position at an OAA Council meeting, which took place on January 21.
“A few years ago, I wouldn’t have imagined I would find myself in this wonderful role,” says Speigel. “I’m honoured, excited, and eager to get to work.”

Speigel’s career has spanned more than 30 years and five cities, including Sudbury, Ottawa, New York, Neuchâtel, and now Toronto. As a young graduate aware of the barriers faced by women in the profession she and four other designers launched an all-women firm, Villa Villa, a group she describes as “brave and creative,” where she cut her teeth in the industry. The winning designs for the seventh annual Winter Stations in Toronto’s east end Beach district have been revealed alongside new partnerships with The Distillery District and Beach BIA.
With plans for the annual winter art show impacted by provincial lockdowns, these partnerships, along with sponsorships from the Ontario Association of Architects, Minto Communities, MicroPro Sienna, Context Development, RioCan, Urban Capital, Demirov Group, Parallax, Westdale Properties, Bousfields, kg&a, Sali Tabacchi Branding & Design and Meevo Digital will ensure the stations will be exhibited in 2021 once lockdown restrictions are lifted. For now, there is no exhibit timetable as Winter Stations is working with local officials on when to proceed.

Long a beloved landmark in the town of Kinmount, the former Kinmount Railway Station is now getting accolades as a 2020 Queen’s Park Pick.
Nearly 30 MPPs nominated their favourite buildings in their ridings across Ontario, in regions spreading from the Detroit River to James Bay, for the fifth celebration of Ontario’s architectural culture, organized by the Ontario Association of Architects. Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock MPP Laurie Scott nominated the Kinmount train station, which was completed in 1876 and is now home to the Kinmount Heritage Model Railway and Museum.
