OHC Media Availability: Ontario Long-Term Care COVID-19

OHC Media Availability: Ontario Long-Term Care COVID-19 Commission Report April 30, 2021 14:51 ET | Source: Ontario Health Coalition Ontario Health Coalition Toronto, Ontario, CANADA TORONTO, April 30, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) Despite reams of promises and emotional press conferences vowing change, the Ford government has made a formal policy choice to delay any meaningful increase in LTC staffing and thus care by years (see staffing plan released Dec. 17). Mr. Ford has not reinstituted annual surprise inspections. Not one single LTC home owner has been fined for negligence and failure to provide care. None have lost their licenses. Ontario s record of fatalities in LTC ranks among the very worst in the world. The Ontario Health Coalition sees this as a deplorable moral failing.

Overburdened hospitals to transfer patients to long-term care homes

Overburdened hospitals to transfer patients to long-term care homes by CiCi Fan and Tina Yazdani Posted Apr 15, 2021 5:01 pm EDT Last Updated Apr 15, 2021 at 5:24 pm EDT Overburdened Ontario hospitals will begin transferring some patients to available beds in long-term care homes. The Ministry of Long-Term Care and Ontario Health issued a written request to care facilities just days ago, asking them to “do everything they can over the next two weeks to safely admit or readmit hospitalized patients waiting for a space.” The goal is to move at least 1,500 patients across the 626 long-term care homes in the province. Currently there are around 6,000 empty beds in the long-term care system.

Randall Denley: After the pandemic, we ll want more long-term care homes, not fewer

Article content Is a huge expansion of the long-term care sector really what Ontario seniors need? Some experts and advocates are questioning the need for more institutional care for the elderly, and the idea of a better way seems appealing given the death toll and poor performance of the sector during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Ontario government is firmly committed to the long-term care (LTC) model, with an ambitious plan to make the sector bigger and better, and to increase the level of care. The government has already committed $2.68 billion to renovate and expand LTC homes. It also has also promised $4.9 billion to increase direct nursing or personal support care to four hours a day, the highest level in the country.
