UN urges Israel to allow Palestinian elections in east Jerusalem

UN urges Israel to allow Palestinian elections in east Jerusalem   Published On 23 April,2021 07:37 am Palestinians in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem are due to vote on May 22. UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - The United Nations and European members of the Security Council called Thursday for all eligible Palestinians in Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem to be able vote in the first Palestinian legislative elections in 15 years. Palestinians in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem are due to vote on May 22 ahead of a planned presidential election in July that various opinion polls have President Mahmoud Abbas losing. The Palestinian election commission says 150,000 voters will be able to cast ballots on the outskirts of east Jerusalem, in a process that does not require a green light from Israel. And a symbolic 6,300 will get to vote within the holy city itself under Israeli supervision.

Violent clashes in Jerusalem

BICOM In the UK media, the  BBC reports that dozens of people were injured during violent clashes in Jerusalem between far-right Jewish activists, Palestinians and Israeli police last night. Hundreds of ultranationalist Jews shouting “Death to Arabs” confronted Palestinian demonstrators at the city’s Damascus Gate. Tensions have been rising for several days. Guardian report that Israel’s military has acknowledged that its air defences failed to intercept a missile fired from Syria on Thursday night that traversed 125 miles of its highly protected airspace before it blew up in midair and parts landed near the Dimona nuclear reactor in the Negev desert.
