But during her freshman year at UT, she took the course Introduction to Asian American History, which taught her more about her heritage and broadened her community. She became friends with other Asian American students and joined organizations including the Asian Desi Pacific Islander American Collective.

Jennifer Ho - Yes! Magazine

Jennifer Ho Jennifer Ho is a professor of Asian American Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder. She is the daughter of a refugee father from China and an immigrant mother from Jamaica. She is the author of three books: Consumption and Identity in Asian American Coming-of-Age Novels, Racial Ambiguity in Asian American Culture, which won the 2016 South Atlantic Modern Languages Association award for best monograph, and Understanding Gish Jen. In addition to her academic work, Ho is active in community engagement around issues of race and intersectionality, leading workshops on anti-racism and how to talk about race in our current political climate.

Kamala Harris: What it Means to Be Multiracial in American

There were numerous articles and opinion pieces about whether Harris can legitimately claim to be African American; the authenticity of her Black identity if she has an Indian mother; what it means for her to be biracial; and other articles opining and speculating about her racial, ethnic and even national identity. Harris, the daughter of immigrant parents from Jamaica and India, identifies as Black/African American while also embracing her Indian heritage. Yet the questions in social media and news outlets swirling around her identities demonstrate a continued misunderstanding of race and mixed-race people. Where do loyalties lie? While the debates about Harris’ racial identities may seem new given the recent media attention focused on her, they are similar to the commentary other high-profile mixed-race people have received.
