Another Bali, another controversy. An Indonesian government project aimed at developing a tourism paradise on Lombok island to rival world-famous Bali is under public scrutiny after United Nations experts say local people have been the victims of land grabs, forced evictions and intimidation. The US$3bil (RM12.4bil) project, which includes a circuit that is scheduled to host MotoGP’s first street race, is part of an ambitious programme introduced by the government of President Joko Widodo in 2016 to create “10 new Bali”. In 2020, a similar project on Rinca island, home to the famed Komodo dragons, sparked a backlash from animal rights activists, who fear that it would destroy the natural habitat of the reptiles.
