Ottawa parent Vanessa House Milley says pandemic schooling this year has been grim for her two daughters attending Nepean High School with part-time classes and shortened semesters.
“High-achieving students who usually enjoy school, and who regularly participate in sports and clubs, they are now enduring the year, counting down the days until the summer, and hoping to go back to normal school in the fall,” wrote House Milley in an online petition that has been signed by more than 1,100 people in the last three days.

Ottawa’s largest school board is planning to cut teachers as it faces the double whammy of stagnating enrolment and an expected end to staffing grants awarded this year to keep schools safer during the pandemic.
A report recommends a reduction next fall of 167 elementary and secondary teachers at the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board from the current total of 4,975.

“The reduction is attributable to a combination of lower enrolment projections for next year relative to last year’s projections, and the removal of the temporary positions added this year through the additional (COVID-19) funding provided,” said the report.
