Gardaí has issued its first closure order on a licensed premises where rules designed to save lives through curtailing Covid-19 were being repeatedly broken.
Gardaí have also outlined the results of other flagrant infringements or regulations which ranged from sheebeen, late opening, big crowds and gambling.
A statement said Gardaí carried out thousands of inspections of licensed premised from Friday to Sunday, December 18 - 20. They say the vast majority of premises continue to be compliant but some were breach of regulations.
The most extreme was in the north west of the country where Gardaí issued the first ‘Immediate Closure Order’ to a licensed premises under section 4 Criminal Justice (Enforcement Powers) (Covid-19) Act, 2020.

This weekend gardai issued the first ‘Immediate Closure Order’ under section 4 Criminal Justice (Enforcement Powers) (Covid-19) Act, 2020 to a licensed premises.
Despite repeated engagement by local Gardaí with the licensee in the North West Region, Gardaí continued to observe breaches of Covid-19 regulations including persistent non-compliance with requirement to serve substantial meal, in addition to non-adherence to public health guidelines, resulting in the local Superintendent issuing an ‘Immediate Closure Order’ on the premises for the remainder of that date. A further file will be prepared for consideration by the Director of Public Prosecutions.
