Vergeire heads team of doctors assigned to study new COVID-19 variants

Rosario Vergeire has been named as head of a group of experts tasked to study new COVID-19 variants and suggest policies to the country s coronavirus task force. In a statement, Malacañang said the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases on Tuesday created the Technical Working Group (TWG) on COVID-19 Variants upon the order of President Rodrigo Duterte. This Technical Working Group will monitor and identify the occurrence of new variants of COVID-19 in the country and will provide policy recommendations to the IATF on the appropriate response regarding these variants, the Office of the Presidential Spokesperson said.

Deputy Chief Implementer Vivencio Dizon in a virtual Malacanang Press Briefing held January 5 QUEZON CITY, Jan. 6 (PIA) National Task Force against COVID-19 (NTF COVID-19) Deputy Chief Implementer Vivencio Dizon reported 74 positive cases or a 2% positivity rate from arriving passengers since restrictions were imposed over the new COVID-19 variant.  In a virtual press briefing yesterday, Sec. Dizon confirmed 3,684 arrivals from December 22 to January 3, 2021, where 3,610 tested negative, while 74 tested positive, which equates to a two percent positivity rate.   He said that the specimens from the 74 travelers are being examined at the Philippine Genome Center of University of the Philippines (UP) and at the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) to detect the new variant of COVID-19 that considered to be more contagious.

This, after the Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Wednesday, Dec. 30, began the implementation of entry restrictions approved by Malacañang against travelers from countries with the new variant of the dreaded coronavirus disease. The DOTr, through the Civil Aviation Board (CAB), issued an advisory restricting the entry of travelers, except Filipino citizens, from 20 countries based on a memorandum issued by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea on Tuesday.
