Scientists will share information on COVID-19 saliva, hospital and sewage surveillance tests as well as the Healthy Davis Together program at a UC Davis virtual symposium set for 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13.
UC Davis Chancellor Gary May will deliver the opening remarks. UCD scientists Richard Michelmore, Nam Tram and Heather Bischel will explain the UCD COVID tests and answer questions, said UCD distinguished professor Walter Leal, who is organizing and moderating the symposium.

New cases of the novel coronavirus were declining during the strict lockdown measures that came with the county’s placement in the purple tier of the state’s color-coded reopening blueprint.
Opportunities for free COVID-19 testing will continue through the holidays, though hours and days will be limited at some locations through the end of the year.
Nasal-swab testing offered by the county will be available on Monday, Dec. 28, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Davis Senior Center, 646 A St., and

UCD students and employees will get tested at community sites
The COVID-19 testing center in the UC Davis Activities and Recreation Center will be closed from Dec. 21 through Jan. 1, with the exception of a half-day, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 26, the UC Davis news service announced this week.
UC Davis students and employees have been tested weekly at the ARC since November. With testing now available to all students and employees, and required for anyone entering campus facilities, more than 13,000 tests were conducted at the site last week.

Healthy Davis Together, the unique partnership between UC Davis and the city of Davis aimed at stopping the spread of COVID-19, has been receiving national attention for the ease of and access to testing it provides to anyone who lives or works in Davis.
By offering free, saliva-based testing with results arriving within 24 hours in many cases the city and university hope to minimize spread of the virus here.
But the partnership is focusing not just on saving lives and keeping the community healthy. It’s now aimed at keeping local businesses healthy as well.
