CANBERRA (Reuters) -Australia’s most populous state on Wednesday reported its first locally acquired COVID-19 case in more than a month and health authorities are working to trace the source of the infection.
Australia has largely eradicated COVID-19, but a man in his 50s with no known links to hotels used to quarantine people who have arrived from overseas tested positive for the coronavirus on Tuesday, the New South Wales (NSW) Ministry of Health said in a statement.

The Sydney couple who have mysteriously tested positive to coronavirus are infected by the double mutant Indian variant of the disease.
The B.1.617 strain was identified in the subcontinent in October, with two key mutations to the outer-spike protein that helps the virus bind and enter cells.
The couple have the second of three subvariants known as B.1.617.2. Scientists are not yet sure if the strain is more infectious or more deadly than original Covid, but many fear it probably is.

SYDNEY, May 6 (Reuters) - Australian officials reinstated social distancing measures in Sydney as New Zealand partially suspended the pair s travel bubble on Thursday, amid fears an Indian variant case of COVID-19 could spur a significant outbreak.
The swift action was taken a day after a 50-year-old man became the first reported local transmission case in New South Wales state in more than a month, with the source of his infection baffling health officials.

Sydney, May 5 : Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) was on alert as a new locally acquired Covid-19 case was confirmed in Sydney on Wednesday.
Urgent investigations into the source of the infection and contact tracing are underway, said the state health department, Xinhua reported.
It was reported that the patient hadn t travel overseas recently, and he didn t work in a hotel quarantine, border or health role.
NSW Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant voiced concern as the man had a high viral load, suggesting he was potentially highly infectious. His close contacts are being contacted, tested and isolated and genome sequencing is underway to find out the undetected transmission links.
