Positive case detected in Sydney s locked-down Northern Beaches community 08/01/2021|3min
New South Wales health authorities have identified a positive case in the northern zone of Sydney’s Northern Beaches – nearly three weeks after the region was plunged into a strict lockdown.
The man was previously identified as a close contact of a confirmed case and placed into 14-days of self-isolation – and tested negative to the virus upon completing his quarantine period.
The infection has prompted another health alert to be issued to the Avalon Woolworths for the days between January 2 and 6 – as the northern zone remains in lockdown, meaning the man could only have entered the community for exercise and to shop for essentials.
Australia is on edge as new mutant super-strains of highly infectious coronavirus threaten to wreak havoc across the country.
A family of four that flew in to New South Wales from South Africa have tested positive for the highly infectious coronavirus super-strain.
On Thursday night, NSW Health detected the South African variant in PCR samples from the family, who are in hotel quarantine.
The discovery has alarmed NSW Health authorities, as the South African strain has independently mutated the exact same genomic variant as the United Kingdom super-strain - making both strains nearly 50 per cent more transmissible than the original virus.
NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant said one additional case was confirmed after the reporting period.(9News)
