Taiwan may raise COVID alert level after cluster emerges

Taiwan reported a 16 local cases of coronavirus on Wednesday – the most in a single day since the pandemic began – prompting Health Minister Chen Shih-chung to urge people to be more vigilant and businesses to tighten their disease prevention measures. Chen said the government would tighten COVID-19 prevention measures in all business venues, which will have to close if they are unable to comply. Taiwan has plenty of personal protective equipment supplies and people do not need to panic-buy them, he told reporters, amid a rise in domestic infection figures. The sudden emergence of a new cluster of cases of no clear origin – six were reported on Tuesday – has unnerved an island that has taken pride in its decisive response to COVID-19 as well as its effective contact-tracing and quarantine system.

Taiwan tightens restrictions after new domestic COVID cases Reuters 1 day ago TAIPEI, May 11 (Reuters) - Taiwan s government on Tuesday tightened rules on public gatherings after reporting six new domestic COVID-19 cases with no clear source of infection, a rare rise on the island which has kept the pandemic well under control. Taiwan largely closed its borders early on in the pandemic and has a robust contact tracing and quarantine system, meaning its low case numbers - 1,210 infections to date including 12 deaths - have allowed life to carry on more or less as normal. Already dealing with an outbreak amongst pilots of Taiwan s largest carrier China Airlines and at a hotel where some of them stayed, Health Minister Chen Shih-chung told reporters they had confirmed six new cases with no clear source of infection.
