Brazil s health minister urges Pfizer to speed up vaccine deliveries

REUTERS/Ueslei Marcelino SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Brazil’s Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga asked representatives of pharmaceutical firm Pfizer Inc if they can speed up delivery of 50 million doses of its COVID-19 vaccine, according to a statement from the ministry on Monday. The Brazilian government previously ordered 100 million doses of Pfizer’s vaccine. COVID-19 has killed more than 312,000 people in Brazil and more than 12.5 million have been diagnosed with the respiratory disease, according to health ministry data. Only the United States has reported more deaths and cases.

Brazil names new armed forces commanders amid political tensions

Brazil has named new commanders of its armed forces, a day after President Jair Bolsonaro’s government said it would replace the heads of the army, navy and air force in a shake-up that raised concerns about the far-right leader meddling with the military. In a news conference on Wednesday, Defence Minister Walter Braga Netto announced that Paulo Sergio Nogueira de Oliveira would take over the army, Almir Garnier the navy and Carlos Almeida Baptista Junior the air force. It was Braga Netto’s first news conference since he was appointed to the post on Monday in a sweeping cabinet reshuffle.
