“Don’t arrive early for vaccination booking to help avoid queues outside centres”, says health minister
Wales’ Health Minister has asked people to arrive on time, but not early, for vaccinations to avoid queues that have recently been seen outside some places administering the coronavirus vaccine.
Over the weekend one reader got in touch with a video clip of the queues outside the Strathmore surgery, on Chester Road, saying her elderly relative had been waiting outside in the freezing weather for over an hour for vaccination.
Others have been in touch with concerns about similar external queues, or waiting areas unprotected from the elements.
RESIDENTS should not expect a ‘radical or significant’ reduction in restrictions at the next lockdown review, the Health Minister warns. The Leader previously reported that First Minister Mark Drakeford said headroom was only available for minor tweaks to the national lockdown that has been in force since December. At the last review last week, Mr Drakeford said that whilst the situation in Wales is starting to improve, the tough alert level four rules must continue to be in place for another three weeks to allow the NHS to recover from the latest COVID-19 wave. He added that pushing the restrictions out too soon would be like “letting the coronavirus genie out of the bottle” and having a third wave of the virus sweep Wales.
PEOPLE receiving their vaccinations have been asked to arrive on time to avoid unnecessary queuing. At the Welsh Government press conference on February 3, Health Minister Vaughan Gething addressed concerns over long queues at vaccination centres. He said advice on social distancing whilst queuing has been issued but also about the timeframes when offering people a vaccine. He went on to say they are encouraging people ‘not to arrive early’, though it is ‘understandable people are keen’ to get their vaccine and be protected, if people arrive early significant queues can be expected. He added that attending at the right time is ‘really important’ for everyone involved.
