NYT said that the governor’s most serious aides “engaged in a sustained effort” to prevent
New York State Department of Health (DOH) officials – including Health Commissioner Howard Zucker – from “releasing the true death toll” to both state lawmakers and the general public.
The report also showed the extent of suppression health officials faced. A scientific paper incorporating the actual figures was never published and did not see the light of day. Two letters meant for state legislators – one by the DOH and another penned by Zucker himself – did not reach their recipients. Incidentally, these actions coincided with the period when Cuomo was working on a book regarding the pandemic – with the assistance of his top aide Melissa DeRosa and other advisers.
Essay/Sen. Tom O Mara: No, governor, nursing homes tragedy far from ‘smart’”
N.Y. State Senator Tom O Mara
Here was the lead paragraph in a National Review article late last week following Governor Andrew Cuomo’s May 5th news conference: “New York governor Andrew Cuomo defended an executive order that may have exacerbated coronavirus outbreaks in state nursing homes as ‘smart’ from a ‘medical point of view.’”
Smart?
After all these months, when how Governor Cuomo and his inner circle addressed the COVID-19 pandemic in nursing homes has been defined by cover-ups, stonewalling, lies, and the like, and keeping in mind that the Cuomo administration is under federal investigation for its actions, the governor calls it “smart.”

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) defended his state’s controversial nursing home directive, which instructed nursing homes to accept coronavirus patients, contending this week it was Republicans who “politicized a health order” and referring to the order as a “smart” decision from a medical point of view.
“The Republicans politicized a health order that was put out by the state on March 25, which was, from a medical point of view, smart,” Cuomo said. “They wanted to blame nursing home deaths on that order”: The Republicans politicized that health order…by the Department of Health on March 25, which was from a medical point of view smart, @NYGovCuomo tries to claim.

If Gov. Andrew Cuomo thought he could buy time for his deceptions and abuses of power to fade from the public’s memory, he thought wrong. The case against him just gets worse with every revelation.
It was already apparent that the governor and those around him sought to keep the Legislature and the public from knowing the full extent of COVID-19 deaths among nursing home residents. It was clear the administration stalled a legislative request for complete data for months, including the deaths of nursing home residents in hospitals.
