When grilled on why Hong Kong has been slower to kickoff the Covid vaccination programme compared to other places like Singapore, Health Secretary Sophia Chan put the blame on logistics issues, according to RTHK reports.
“We have to rely on the vaccine manufacturers to let us know when they can deliver the vaccines. In particular, for BioNTech, the logistics are actually very challenging, because of [the requirement for the vaccines to be stored at -70 degrees Celsius, she said.
The government has so far secured three types of vaccines.
Mainland-manufactured Sinovac jabs were scheduled to be the first to arrive – by end of this month. But the lack of sufficient clinical data is holding up the approval process.

Fears over a more infectious variant of Covid-19 have prompted authorities to cut key air links with Britain.

Hong Kong’s Health Secretary Sophia Chan announced yesterday that all flights to and from the United Kingdom were being suspended in response to the emergence of a more virulent strain of Covid-19 in London and southeast England, which British authorities say could be up to 70 percent more infectious. Chan also ordered recent returnees from the U.K. who are undergoing mandatory two-week quarantine inside a hotel to spend another seven days at home in self-isolation, until they test negative for the virus.

HONG KONG Hong Kong will ban all flights arriving from the United Kingdom from midnight local time on Monday, becoming the first city in Asia to announce such a halt after a new super-virulent strain of the novel coronavirus was identified in Britain.
With authorities in the densely packed financial hub seeking to curb already-rising case numbers, Health Secretary Sophia Chan said on Monday there was a need to launch more vigorous and targeted measures to prevent further spreading of COVID-19 in Hong Kong.
