Much has been said about effective leadership during the days surrounding Jan. 20âs presidential inauguration. Locally, newly-elected student officers at Central Montco Technical High School and classmates from their sending schools view it this way:
âA common thread that you will find in all leaders is the ability to be self-aware and possess good communication skills and integrity,â says Cameron Johnson, co-president of Norristown Area High Schoolâs Class of 2021.
Combined, these qualities âare the core of a true leader,â observes Johnson, a CMTHS Allied Health major and active HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) member, president of CMTHSâs National Technical Honor Society and vice-president of NAHSâs Black Student Union.

BLOOMINGDALE Students at Jefferson County Joint Vocational School will compete later this month in a variety of skillsets, but this year’s contest will have some changes due to COVID-19.
The annual Spotlight on Skills competition is set for Jan. 27-28 and students in academic and lab programs will participate in a series of events throughout the day. Each school program has a student organization and pupils will compete to earn spots in regional competitions.
SkillsUSA includes about 80 percent of the students while other groups include the Health Occupations Students of America, Future Career and Community Leaders of America, Business Professionals of America and the Future Farmers of America. The technical trade skills portion centers on more hands-on knowledge while the leadership segment views softer skills from CPR/first aid to job interviews.
LCTC students gather 2,653 items for donation to Lake Area Helping Hands

Donating to your community is one of the more fulfilling ways to spend the holidays. For students at the Lake Career and Technical Center (LCTC), it became the goal of a massive project to round up as many donations as possible to give to Lake Area Helping Hands. After months of work, the group was immensely successful, handing over 2,653 donations to those who needed it most.
Camdenton senior Kallie Orozco, says she and her fellow SkillsUSA and HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) students at LCTC saw a need in the community and took it upon themselves to see what they could do to help. The group set out to gather as many local donations as possible, starting with requests from student families. She says they received a good amount of donations but wanted to raise even more.
