HCA Healthcare and University Health didn t see a way to meaningfully expand their market share in the competitive Atlanta market, leading to a string of recent hospital deals that are poised to benefit Piedmont Healthcare, merger and acquisition experts said.
Piedmont will add seven hospitals to its current 11-hospital footprint via back-to-back transactions, courtesy of HCA and University Health. HCA sold its last Atlanta-area hospital to AdventHealth Thursday.
The profitable Atlanta-area hospitals will increase the not-for-profit health system s negotiating power with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia, allow it to grow its service lines and spread its fixed costs over a wider asset base, M&A experts said. Meanwhile, HCA and University Health can exit or partner in markets they were unlikely to lead on their own while receiving a return on their investment, they said.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. As a waiter who had been laid off four times during the pandemic, Carmen Lucci couldn’t afford a COVID-19 test. But he couldn’t afford to go without it, either.
The La Mesa resident was exposed to COVID-19 in October, and his employer demanded a negative test before his upcoming shift or a two-week quarantine.
Lucci spent $195 on a rapid test at Covid Clinic, a startup from Orange County that now operates in 10 states. He estimates it took him three or four days of work to earn the money back.

ATLANTA (AP) One of Georgia s largest hospital systems is seeking to get getting bigger, buying two hospitals in Macon, one in Cartersville and one in Snellville for $950 million.
Piedmont Healthcare announced the purchase Monday from HCA Healthcare. The move would give Piedmont 15 acute care hospitals statewide, as it jockeys with other major Atlanta-area health systems for size and market power.
If regulators approve, Piedmont would buy 310-bed Eastside Medical Center in Snellville, 310-bed Coliseum Medical Centers and 103-bed Coliseum Northside in Macon, and 119-bed Cartersville Medical Center. The deal also includes two inpatient psychiatric hospitals, one in Macon and one in Snellville.
