Last week also saw an increase of eight outbreaks in extended families as the number rose from 13 to 21, according to a report from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre. Workplaces continued to figure prominently, with 29 outbreaks of the virus – although there was a fall of seven compared with the previous week. Most were in the commercial sector, followed by food production. There were 24 new outbreaks in residential institutions, including 18 in centres for people with a disability. And another 94 Covid-related deaths were reported yesterday, marking yet another sad day. The deceased ranged in age from 36 to 100; 47 of the deaths occurred in February, with the others happening in January, December and November.

A further 75 deaths from the virus were notified to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre. Forty-six of those deaths occurred in February, 27 occurred in January and two were earlier. The median age of those who died is 84 years and the age range is 34-100 years. Of the cases notified today, 622 are men / 688 are women, 58% are under 45 years of age and the median age is 40 years old. Some 428 cases are in Dublin, 122 in Cork, 93 in Galway, 78 in Kildare, 77 in Limerick and the remaining 520 cases are spread across all other counties. 

Figures show fall in number of Covid-19 outbreaks

Health Correspondent The total number of Covid-19 outbreaks reduced last week, according to new figures from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre. There were 196 outbreaks reported, compared with 265 the previous week. The biggest reduction was seen in private houses, which fell by more than half to 36. But there was an increase in extended family outbreaks from 13 the previous week, to 21 last week. There was a small rise in retail outlet outbreaks to four, compared with two the previous week. Workplace outbreaks reduced to 29, compared with 36 the previous week. The data is for the week to Saturday 30 January, during which the HSE resumed contact tracing of close contacts.

An additional 15 deaths from the virus were also confirmed to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre. All of these deaths occurred in January. The median age of those who died is 84 years and the age range is 68-99 years. Of the cases notified today: 579 are men and 659 are women; 60% are under 45 years of age and the median age is 39 years old. Some 430 cases are in Dublin, 97 in Wexford, 87 in Cork, 84 in Limerick, 76 in Galway and the remaining 473 cases are spread across all other counties. As of 2pm today, 1,516 Covid-19 patients are hospitalised, of which 211 are in ICU. 39 additional hospitalisations have occurred in the past 24 hours.
