CAMEROON: An Alarming Increase Of Gender-Based Violence In Cameroon

Created: 10 May 2021 According to various United Nations (UN) and human rights organization reports, there has been a dramatic increase in sexual violence and assault cases towards women in the Anglophone Northwest and Southwest regions of Cameroon. According to  Al Jazeera, the main perpetrators of the attacks are “armed separatists, military personnel and civilians.” Children and women have been the main targets of sexual violence during the conflict that has caused mass displacement and harm in Cameroon since 2016.   A drastic increase in rape, sexual and physical assault cases have been documented in these Anglophone regions. According to  Al Jazeera, between January to March, there were approximately 500 sexual assault cases reported, this does not account for those unreported. The 

Turkish Authorities Arrest ISIS Military Leader With Ties to al-Baghdadi

Share This: Turkish security forces on Sunday arrested a foreigner in Istanbul believed to be ISIS’s military leader and have ties to dead ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. The Afghan national, who goes by the nickname “Asim,” has been dubbed the right-hand man of al Baghdadi. Turkish security authorities arrested him in the Atasehir district on the city’s Asian side. He had been traveling on a fake passport, according to a statement released by the police. Asim had disappeared months after the terrorist group was overrun in Syria and Iraq in December 2017. Before that he had helped hide al-Baghdadi, Turkish intelligence and security officials told the news media.

Wave Of Israeli Air Strikes Hit Syria-Iraq Border

On the night of Wednesday 13 th January, a wave of air strikes were reportedly carried out by Israel on Iran-backed militia positions in Syria, in the fourth attack in two weeks. The regions of eastern Deir al-Zour and Albu Kamal have been impacted the most in these recent attacks. Statistics from the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has stated that at least 57 people were killed and many more wounded in the strikes including 14 Syrian soldiers and 43 Allied militiamen. These series of raids have been stated as the deadliest since 2018. It has been reported that the damage from this airstrike was still being assessed and accused Israel of “directly interfering to support terrorist organisations”, particularly the jihadist group Islamic State, which is active in the area.
