Just the name sends shivers up many people s spines. But a little education can go a long way in protecting yourself and the misunderstood, slithering snake.
Ophidiophobia, the fear of snakes, is listed among the most common fears in America. More than half of the U.S. population is afraid of snakes, according to a 2001 Gallup poll. And a 2013 National Institutes of Health study found that the human brain is evolutionarily conditioned to be afraid of snake-like forms.
Although the notion of a good snake, like the Speckled Kingsnake, is becoming more common because they eat venomous snakes, it is not as commonly accepted in Arkansas that even venomous snakes have their rightful place in the ecosystem.

On Feb. 16, Mountain Home residents Marisa Jett and Al Ratzel were in the Hobby Lobby parking lot feeding the ring-billed gulls that flock to the lot seeking food. It s something Jett, Ratzel and others have enjoyed doing for some time.
But on that day, instead of a pleasant time watching the birds wheel through the sky, they watched in horror as two trucks smashed through the flock, killing three birds outright and fatally injuring a fourth bird that had to be put down. There was no reason to do that, an emotional Ratzel said. It was just a senseless slaughter.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KAIT) - The elk hunting season in the Natural State has been the same as in previous years, with officials saying three elk tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease.
Of the 47 elk, nearly half were harvested by hunters on public lands, officials said.
Nearly 5,300 people applied for public land elk tags to hunt last year, up about 2,000 applications from 2019.
