Danny Barker Virtual Guitar and Banjo Fest Kicks Off Thursday, Jan. 14
Organizers have announced the lineup for an all-virtual 2021 Danny Barker Banjo and Guitar Festival. A partnership of the festival, the New Orleans Jazz Museum, New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park, OffBeat and WWOZ-FM, the 2021 mix of interviews and live music streamed from the balcony of the Jazz Museum (but no in-person audience permitted) will be presented across several web platforms, including the Facebook pages of the Jazz Museum, Jazz Park, WWOZ, OffBeat and the festival. Streaming dates for the festival are Thursday, January 14, 2021 – Saturday, January 16, 2021.
Interviews will be conducted by longtime WWNO-FM host and producer Fred Kasten, and will include segments with multi-Grammy winning vocalist and Tony winning actress Dee Dee Bridgewater; Grammy winning vocalist Catherine Russell; cellist, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Leyla McCalla; and composer and educator Roger Dickerson. Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser and the Louisiana State Museum announced Tuesday that the New Orleans Jazz Museum, through a grant from the National Park Foundation, is partnering with the New Orleans Jazz Historical Park to develop a series of virtual field trips that will be distributed to school children nationally. Part of the National Park Foundation’s Open Outdoors for Kids Hybrid Learning Grant Program, the $30,000 grant will be used to create a digital field trip component for the New Orleans Jazz Museum called New Orleans Cultural & Musical Connections: C

This week’s Quarantunes performance on December 25 at 2 p.m. CST comes from The Hot Club of Storyville, a manouche/ New Orleans jazz band that combines their passion for music with a shared love of urban exploration. Led by violinist/composer Hanna Mignano, the group is heavily rooted in the gypsy jazz tradition in the style of Django Reinhardt’s Quintette de Hot Club du France, while drawing on much inspiration from New Orleans trad jazz, Western swing, Brazilian choro and the occult.

Caroling in Jackson Square, presented by Patio Planters of the Vieux Carre since 1946, will take place with a different twist this December 20, a la pandemic. On Sunday, December 20, the New Orleans Jazz Museum will welcome Caroling in Jackson Square, 2020 Style! to its grounds at 7 p.m. for one hour of holiday sing-along festivities. Song books and candles will be provided as usual. Masks, safety protocols and mindful distancing will be strictly enforced in accordance with State and City guidelines.
