Primarily, the court order stops the New Orleans Public Schools district staff from placing around 300 Singleton Charter School students in other public schools, a process the district told the school board it would begin this week.

Lawsuit: DCFS takes baby away from adoptive family to place with relative across country

Stock photo NEW ORLEANS - The State of Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) wants to defend itself against a foster home negligence accusation in federal court.  The complaint was filed on January 21 in the Orleans Parish Civil District Court and removed to federal court on April 19. The plaintiffs are Courtney and Johnny Jacob Landry, individually and on behalf of their three minor children.  The defendants also include DCFS Secretary Marketa Garner Walters, the State of Louisiana, and DCFA employee Troy Thomas.  The Landrys fostered and then adopted a child born addicted to drugs. After the baby s biological parents both died, the plaintiffs say they were informed by the defendants that the only other family was a half-uncle in New York who had made no attempts to visit the baby while he spent 51 days in NICU. 

Canal St Waffle House sued after vomit on stairs causes fall

NEW ORLEANS - The Canal St. Waffle House is called to pay up in a personal injury lawsuit first filed in the Orleans Parish Civil District Court after a woman slipped on vomit on the diner s front steps.  According to documents filed on February 17 in Orleans Parish District Court, plaintiff Silvia Rodriguez visited the Waffle House on March 1, 2020. While leaving, she was unaware that there was vomit on the restaurant s entrance steps, so she slipped and sustained serious injuries that included spinal damage requiring an MRI, the suit says. The Waffle House, along with its manager Brittany Robinson, are sued for the plaintiff s medical expenses and injuries. Waffle House removed the case to New Orleans federal court on April 5.

Family of woman killed by float during New Orleans parade files suit against parade, city

Sunseri The family of Geraldine Carmouche, who was killed by a tandem float during a parade in New Orleans on Feb. 19, 2020, is suing the city, the parade company and its captain for wrongful death, alleging negligence. Carmouche, 58, was killed during the NYX Parade when she attempted to cross the street between two floats connected in tandem. Titled the Mystic Krewe of NYX, the parade is an all-woman Mardi Gras-related parade that features women of diverse backgrounds. NYX is the name of the ancient Greek goddess of the night. The allegation filed by Carmouche’s family charges that the space between the two floats connected in tandem should have been enclosed off with a plainly visible barrier as required by a city ordinance.
