Mistrial declared after ride-hailing driver accused of sexually assaulting teen falls ill

Trial proceedings for a ride-hailing driver accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl at a Palm Desert resort were abruptly stopped and a mistrial declared because the defendant fell ill, the Riverside County District Attorney s Office reported today.
Riverside County Superior Court Judge Albert J. Wojcik declared the mistrial on the second day of jury selection for the trial of Ismael Gaspar of Cathedral City at the Southwest Justice Center in Murrieta.
Gaspar, who remains free on $55,000 bail, is scheduled to return to court at the Larson Justice Center in Indio on April 1, where a new trial date could be set.

A Palm Desert man who tossed a Molotov cocktail into a Republican group s office in the Coachella Valley is slated to plead guilty in federal court on Monday to a felony charge in which he faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison.
Carlos Espriu, 23, entered into a plea agreement with the U.S. Attorney s Office last Thursday in which he admitted to firebombing the East Valley Republican Women Federated office in the 78-800 block of Highway 111 in

Espriu, who also faces state charges involving the same crime, is scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court in downtown Los Angeles on Monday before U.S. District Judge Percy Anderson for a change of plea hearing.

MURRIETA, CA A man and woman were allegedly caught transporting more than four pounds of fentanyl in Murrieta, authorities announced Wednesday.
Cristobal Chavez, 45, and Yesica Hernandez, 39, both of Los Angeles, were arrested Tuesday night on suspicion of transportation of narcotics for sale. They were booked into the Smith Correctional Facility in Banning, where Hernandez was being held in lieu of $200,000 bail. Custody information on Chavez was not immediately available.
According to the Riverside County District Attorney s Office, members of the county s Gang Impact Team, which includes D.A. s office investigators, were tipped that Chavez and Hernandez were allegedly bringing a quantity of fentanyl into the county, prompting the team to track the pair down.
