If you’re trying to get a handle on the city of Springfield’s official stance is on gambling and its place in our community, you might have better odds at the roulette wheel or blackjack table.
As has been the case since the rise of riverboat casinos in Illinois more than 30 years ago, Springfield has often had conflicting views on the issue, which in turn has led to confusion and plenty of missed opportunities.
We are the community with a luxury hotel that was built with space to hold a casino, but which could never find the community backing to secure a license. But we’re also the community where at least some people literally discussed flooding a downtown street between two major hotels in order to create a moat where a floating casino could operate.

Springfield aldermen will vote this week on a measure that would effectively place a cap on the number of local establishments that can offer video gaming.
Alderman Chuck Redpath’s proposal would prohibit establishments that obtain liquor licenses after April 30
th of this year from having video gaming terminals on the premises.
Mayor Jim Langfelder has said he believes the city is reaching a saturation point for video gaming.

From my 50+ years in this world, whenever someone, or a group of someones, point to one thing and start screaming armageddon I immediately and permanently put them in the “pay no attention to” folder.
If the goal is to have harsh racial underpinnings, then what will continue is this premise that the divide in race is found in all facets, including systemic and institutional racism, and “welcoming” that in discussions.
