Child pornography nets Lethbridge man jail time

A Lethbridge man caught with hundreds of photos of child pornography and nearly a dozen videos, has been sent to a federal penitentiary.
Brandon Gerardo Bran Eguizabal, 27, who pleaded guilty in February to one count of possession of child pornography, was sentenced Wednesday in Lethbridge provincial court to two years in prison.
Crown Prosecutor Michelle Tai told court Lethbridge police searched a northside home at which Eguizabal was living on June 4, 2020, and he admitted possessing and receiving child pornography from other online users through chats and text messaging. Police seized eight electronic devices and found child pornography on three of them.

One investigation saw police search two homes and seize 4.5 kilograms of fentanyl, along with methamphetamine and cocaine. Two people were arrested and police also seized six firearms. “Fentanyl has been a scourge in our communities and organized crime is responsible, said Supt. Dwayne Lakusta. ALERT will remain ruthless in our pursuit of drug dealers, and investigations like these, demonstrate our success in getting harmful drugs off the street.

The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) is planning to double the size of its child exploitation unit as it continues to see a record numbers of related cases.
The agency’s Internet and Child Exploitation (ICE) team handled 2,136 case intakes in 2020-21, up 40 per cent from the 1,555 it received in 2019-20. That trend has continued into the new year, with the team placing 60 charges relating to sexual exploitation of children online against 24 people between Jan. 1 and March 31, a news release said Tuesday.
