City police laid five criminal charges against people protesting COVID-19 orders on Saturday, and received nearly 500 public complaints last week about possible health violations.
The assault, obstruction and resisting arrest charges arose from scuffles and wrestling matches between protesters and police at a rally near city hall that attracted between 200 and 250 demonstrators, in one of two weekend gatherings that also netted about 30 tickets for health violations.

In at least one case, protesters tried to intervene as one person was being detained by officers, said police Chief Mark Neufeld.
