Cougars to share importance of healthy lifestyle with local students

The Prince George Cougars will be spreading the word about healthy living to students.
Due to the pandemic, the Spirit of Healthy Kids program will be held virtually this year.
Last year, the Cougars, the Northern Health Authority, and the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation expanded the SOHK School Program to include schools across the Northern Health region.
The program, now in its sixth year, is being offered to close to 200 elementary schools throughout the North.
“The ongoing pandemic has impacted everyone and despite the challenges our team is facing, we felt it was more important than ever to find a way to offer our extremely successful school program this winter,” said Cougars’ Vice President, Business Andy Beesley.
Elementary school students will get a chance to get tips from a player on the Prince George Cougars hockey team as part of a campaign to encourage health, wellness and community giving among northern B.C. s youth.

Spirit of the North Day, a four-hour event and fundraiser for the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation, was held April 11 and recognized $2,139,720 in donations.
CKPG TV viewers were able to watch “What’s Cooking” and the foundation replaced commercial breaks with updates, pledges and presentations regarding donations that are helping to build University Hospital of Northern B.C. (UNHBC) into a centre for healthcare excellence for northern B.C.
The special areas of interest include upgrades to the surgical suites for which the foundation has pledged $1.8 million. These upgrades and other changes and improvements in the ambulatory care and diagnostics areas are to help UNHBC get ready for the arrival of the Northern Cancer Clinic in 2012.
