Amid the shortage of COVID-19 vaccines reported by several states, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday dialled his Australian counterpart Scott Morrison and sought his support for global waiver on patent protection for COVID-19 vaccines.
The two leaders discussed the initiative taken at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) by India and South Africa for global waiver on patent protection for the vaccines and agreed on the need to ensure affordable and equitable access to vaccines and medicines for containing COVID-19 globally.

The two leaders spoke in the backdrop an exponential surge in Covid-19 cases in India and growing chorus across the world for a waiver on intellectual property rights for Covid-19 vaccines under the mechanism set up by the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

Modi and Morrison also reiterated the importance of working together for a rules-based international order and a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific region.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to his Australian counterpart Scott Morrison today as the two leaders agreed on the importance of ensuring equitable access to vaccines and medicines, and discussed possible initiatives for it.
PM Modi and Scott Morrison also reiterated the importance of working together for a rules-based international order and a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific region.
During his telephonic conversation with Scott Morrison, the prime minister conveyed his appreciation for the prompt and generous support extended by the government and the people of Australia for India s fight against the second wave of COVID-19, according to a Prime Minister s Office (PMO) statement.
