GM Korea workers strike for higher wages
Unionised workers at GM Korea took limited strike action at three South Korean plants on Wednesday to demand higher wages and job security, following a series of employer- and union-imposed wage freezes last year. GM Korea and its union, a branch of the Korean Metal Workers Union, have had 13 rounds of negotiations over wages since May.
The union has lodged a claim for a 99,000 won ($US86) increase in monthly base pay, a cash bonus equal to 150 percent of the ordinary monthly wage and a special bonus of four million won. The demands are worth approximately 10 million won in total per worker. In response to previous job cuts they are also demanding the production of new vehicle models at the plant in Bupyeong, in Incheon.

India: Punjab public sector workers strike for better pay
Workers from several Punjab state government departments stopped work for two days on July 8 in protest over the Sixth Pay Commission’s recommendations. The action followed demonstrations by public sector workers and doctors on June 23 and a week-long strike by the Punjab State Ministerial Services Union on June 22 over the commission’s recommendations.
Mass Media Employees and Officers Association members from the Health Department’s mass media wing stopped work and demonstrated on July 8. The association complained that their demand that workers in jobs with the same educational qualification be paid the same as workers in the Public Relations Department had been ignored.
Bring Jobs Back Home: Australian Manufacturing Union
The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union has launched a new campaign to bring manufacturing back onshore, by calling on the government to support their local producers.
The campaign argues that the federal and state governments have been hurting Aussie manufacturers by sending jobs overseas, “time and time again,” while neglecting investment into skilled local manufacturing workers. They are calling for the post-pandemic rebuild period to be viewed as a unique opportunity to get the industry “back to where it belongs.”
“The COVID-19 pandemic exposed what we’ve always known a strong local manufacturing industry is essential for the health of our nation,” the union said in its campaign promotion. “It’s manufacturing workers who’ve kept food on our tables and made sure we had PPE during a pandemic. Now they’re being ignored as we head into national economic recovery.”
