Australian Grand Prix Corporation boss Andrew Westacott says disappointment over the race s cancellation has been compounded by looming bumper crowds at other events.
Yet Westacott insisted that the race s future had not been plunged into doubt after being called off for a second consecutive year due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Australian and Victorian travel restrictions amid the ongoing pandemic, combined with low vaccination rates, prompted the official cancellation of both the F1 race and the MotoGP event this year. They were scheduled for November 21 and October 24 respectively. It s very, very disappointing but Formula One and MotoGP have to operate in the conditions that prevail in each of the countries, Westacott told

SYDNEY - Australia s state of Victoria on Tuesday announced the cancelation of the 2021 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix and Australian MotoGP, citing low rates of vaccination making it impossible for the events to go ahead.
The F1 Grand Prix, normally held in March in Melbourne s Albert Park, was initially postponed to November in the hopes that the state would be ready for an international event by then.
Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said that it would be hard for Melbourne to host the event given that vaccination rates are not at the critical mass needed.

AGPC CEO Andrew Westacott attempted to reassure fans the corporation will do everything it takes for the next edition of both races to take place in Australia in 2022. We understand this is not the news MotoGP and Formula 1 fans wanted to hear, said Westacott. I would like to extend my thanks to the Victorian Government, Formula 1 and Dorna Sports for their unwavering resilience and support during this challenging period, and for their ongoing commitment to these two great events. There are bound to be ongoing challenges with COVID-19, but I want to reassure fans that while there is sadness and disappointment amongst our wonderful AGPC staff there is a tenacity and determination to make sure the next episodes of MotoGPTM at the Island and Formula 1 at the new Albert Park layout are sensational showcases of how we do things in Victoria.
