Lloyd s Bank s Business Barometer for May 2021, a poll of 1,200 firms, found that the overall confidence of firms in the East has risen to 26% its highest level since February 2020. Companies reported being more confident in their own business prospects month-on-month, up eight points at 25%. When taken alongside their optimism in the wider economy which was down four points to 27%  this gives a headline confidence reading of 26%.

East companies behind Boris over timetable out of lockdown

Dave Atkinson, regional director for the East of England at Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking, said: “This data shows the positive impact that the roadmap out of lockdown and the clarity it provides  has had on local businesses.  “It’s fantastic to see many firms are putting plans in place to re-open at full capacity when lockdown eases.  “The next few months will be critical to the region’s recovery and we remain by the side of businesses, ensuring they have the support they need to seize all opportunities as trading resumes.” A separate study by Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) and accountancy giant KPMG suggests recruiters are placing more people in work as businesses start returning to normal as lockdown eases.

The Lloyds Bank’s Business Barometer for March 2021 questioned 101 businesses in the East of England and found that business confidence has risen 20 points during March taking it to its first positive reading in a year.   Firms felt more confident about their own business prospects month-on-month up 21 points at 16%. Their optimism about the economy in general had also risen 19 points to 8%.
