(Mike Wakefield, North Shore News) THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay District Health Unit announced 26 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 Saturday, continuing a spike that has seen over 100 cases reported in just three days. Of the newest cases, 18 involved individuals in the Thunder Bay area, 5 in district First Nations, and 3 in district communities. Eight of the cases were associated with an outbreak at the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre, and another was associated with a separate outbreak at the Thunder Bay District Jail.

The local health unit is reporting 21 new cases of the novel coronavirus. Fourteen of the new cases are within Thunder Bay and the surrounding areas while four are from first nations communities and three come from district communities. Officials indicate that eleven of the new cases were obtained through close contact, three are tied to the Valard East-West Tie project outbreak and two come from the outbreak at Southbridge Roseview. One new case of COVID-19 is linked to the Thunder Bay District Jail and one was obtained through travel outside of Northwestern Ontario. The Thunder Bay District Health Unit is dealing with 143 active cases with six cases resolved.

Six of those cases were related to outbreaks: three with the Valard Construction East-West construction camp, two with the Southbridge Roseview long-term care home and one at the Thunder Bay District Jail. Of the remaining 15 cases, 11 are considered a result of close contact, one travel outside of Northwestern Ontario, two no known exposures and one was listed as pending. Fourteen of the cases were reported in Thunder Bay and surrounding areas, four in First Nations communities and three in district communities.
