Chamber urges province to cover costs of paid sick days

(Leith Dunick, tbnewswatch.com/FILE) THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce is calling on the provincial government to temporarily cover the costs of employee sick days in the effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19. President Charla Robinson on Monday said while she agrees paid sick days are necessary, expecting small businesses already struggling because of lockdowns to foot the bill is unrealistic. Unfortunately, she said, until some measures are put in place, employees who are not feeling well will continue to head to work, unwilling or unable to sacrifice a day or more of pay.

Eleven variant of concern cases reported by TBDHU

Cassette rapid test for COVID-19 or novel coronavirus 2019 found in Wuhan, China THUNDER BAY The Thunder Bay District Health Unit says they ve detected 11 new COVID-19 cases tied to variants of concern.  The health unit on Monday announced 10 new cases, but confirmed the 11 variant cases, nearly doubling the number already announced in Thunder Bay, for a total of 24 this month. It takes longer to confirm variants of concern, which were later detected in previously announced cases.  Variant strains tend to spread more rapidly and often result in more serious illness.  With eight previous cases considered resolved, there are now 69 active cases in the district, the sixth straight reporting day that the active case count has grown. It was 49 on April 19. 

Six New COVID Cases In The Region

The Northwestern Health Unit reports six new cases of COVID-19 across the region. The Kenora Health Hub adds four new positive test results, while the Dryden and Red Lake Hubs report one each. Follow up has started and anyone who is identified as a contact for any of these cases will be notified directly. Active cases are not updated on weekends. The health unit recommends that everyone, including those who have been vaccinated, assume COVID-19 is in their community and practice preventive measures. Anyone who has symptoms, or who has been in contact with a positive case, should self-isolate and get tested at an assessment centre.

NWHU reports 6 new COVID-19 cases

The Northwestern Health Unit reported six new cases of COVID-19 Sunday.Mike Wakefield, North Shore News files FORT FRANCES, Ont. – The Northwestern Health Unit reported six new cases of COVID-19 Sunday, mainly concentrated in the Fort Frances area, with the number of active cases growing to 86. The new cases included four in the NWHU’s Fort Frances health hub, and one each in the Dryden and Red Lake hubs. As of Sunday, there were 28 active cases in the Kenora health hub, 20 in the Fort Frances hub, 17 in the Sioux Lookout hub, 14 in the Emo hub, 4 in the Red Lake hub, and 3 in the Dryden hub.
