Lakehead University continues discussions about returning to in-person learning in the fall.
President Vice-Chancellor Dr. Moira McPherson maintains the conversations do include the Thunder Bay District Health Unit.
“Our students, faculty and students are all planning for delivery of programming and services that will be primarily face to face,” McPherson said. “At the end of the day, we will do everything we need to do to maintain a safe environment for our students and faculty.”
McPherson also confirmed ongoing work by the school’s international branch to welcome out of country students back.
“They continue to work tirelessly with the authorities, and with all the most up to date information that we can secure so we can effectively to plan for our international students,” McPherson added.
THUNDER BAY - Students across the province have spent the majority of the last year learning from home and following the announcement that schools will remain closed until September, the local medical officer of health says the impacts of being out of the classroom for so long could be felt for years.
“What we know about youth and children is experiences they may have in the childhood years, especially the younger years, I imagine even for secondary school students, these times are really important not only for their educational development, but also their social development and overall well being,” said Dr. Janet DeMille, medical officer of health with the Thunder Bay District Health Unit.

THUNDER BAY - Students, teachers, and education staff should find out Wednesday afternoon if they will be returning to the classroom before the end of the academic year.
Premier Doug Ford will be joined by Minister of Health Christine Elliott and Minister of Education Stephen Lecce to make an announcement at 1 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.
According to reports by both CTV News and the
Toronto Star, sources have indicated the provincial government is leaning toward keeping schools closed until September, but Elliott said no final decision had been made as of Tuesday.
Families across Ontario have been waiting for an announcement on whether or not schools would reopen this year or remain under virtual learning until September.
