The cybersecurity industry is guarding against all the wrong threats

The cybersecurity industry is guarding against all the wrong threats SHARE In the aftermath of two headline-grabbing attacks over the past six months, more high-profile security researchers and analysts are beginning to cast a wary eye at internal systems and technology tools. The SolarWinds breach, a compromise of third-party software used to protect networks in the U.S. government and four-fifths of Fortune 500 companies, was discovered in December and continues to play out in terms of damage. That was followed by the discovery in March that four previously unknown or “zero day” or yet-undiscovered vulnerabilities had been found in Microsoft Exchange Server software, which is used by 57% of Cloud Exchange mailboxes and 43% of on-premises clients.

As this threat continues to evolve, businesses are increasingly facing what’s referred to as cloud ransomware – a new generation of attack that explicitly spreads through the cloud and encrypts SaaS data associated with cloud services.

Cybereason CEO Told the World About DarkSide s Hacking Techniques From a Bomb Shelter in Israel

In tracing DarkSide s roots, Cybereason researchers were so jarred by what they had learned that the company published a blog post at the beginning of April laying out some of its findings. It described DarkSide as a team of extortionists who steal private data and threaten to make it public unless the victim pays a large sum of money typically $200,000 to $2 million. They re called ransomware attacks, and Cybereason had learned that DarkSide was not only a big perpetrator of such cybercrimes, but was also selling a product described as Ransomware as a Service that allowed other groups to use its homegrown tools and similarly wreak havoc for money.
