TAIPEI: Taiwan reported 286 new domestic Covid-19 cases on Thursday, a slight increase on the previous day but giving the health minister cause for a sliver of optimism that the situation was not dramatically worsening.
Having been held up as an example of how to successful stop the virus in its tracks, Taiwan has over the past two weeks reported a spiralling number of infections in the community, with 1,572 cases.

Taipei, May 20 (CNA) The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) said Thursday that based on the decline in test positivity rate for COVID-19 cases in Greater Taipei, there is no indication the outbreak is worsening.
Health Minister Chen Shih-chung (陳時中), who also heads the CECC, said Taipei saw a test positivity rate of 4.6 percent on Wednesday, compared with 10-11 percent in the first few days after the rapid screening service started on May 14.

While Taiwan strived to speed up COVID-19 vaccine deliveries from its international allies in a recent surge of availability, Beijing’s offer to help did not win the confidence of Taiwan people who considered the proffered vaccine to be a political ploy, a Taiwanese scholar said.
Recently, Su Tzu-Yun, director of the Defense Strategy and Resources Division of the Institute for National Defense and Security Research in Taiwan, told The Epoch Times the reasons behind Taiwan’s reluctance to receive Chinese-made vaccines.
Taiwan, a model territory once known for successfully handling the Covid-19 outbreak, reported 295 new cases and one death on May 20, making it the sixth consecutive day of over 100 domestic infections, official data shows.

Infections have been newly confirmed at two more healthcare facilities, bringing the tally of facilities to five, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) said yesterday as it reported 286 new domestic cases of COVID-19 and nine imported cases.
Transmissions of COVID-19 were newly identified at two Taipei healthcare facilities: Taipei City Hospital’s Heping branch and Tri-Service General Hospital’s Songshan branch, Centers for Disease Control Deputy Director-General Philip Lo (羅一鈞) told the center’s afternoon briefing.
